STATEMENT FROM NEW YORK LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS AND THE BUILDING DECARBONIZATION COALITION

“The Senate took a major step forward for New Yorkers’ health, pocketbooks, and climate future. The repeal of the 100-foot rule and the passage of the Consumer Savings and Reliability Act together demonstrate a strong commitment to modernizing our energy systems in ways that benefit consumers and support long-term planning.

The 100-foot rule has forced everyday New Yorkers to subsidize costly and unnecessary gas line extensions, adding more than $200 million a year to ratepayer bills while locking in fossil fuel infrastructure. Repealing this outdated subsidy will not only reduce ratepayer costs, but also speed up the transition to cleaner, safer alternatives. The Consumer Savings and Reliability Act will also give utilities the ability to pursue smarter planning to save New Yorkers money. Together, these bills empower utilities to make economically sound, forward-looking decisions that align with our clean energy goals while protecting consumers from wasteful spending.

We applaud the Senate for advancing both of these critical measures, and we urge the Assembly to act quickly so they can be signed into law this year. New Yorkers deserve the cleaner air, safer communities, and lower energy costs these bills will help deliver.
