Statement from the Building Decarbonization Coalition on
New York Governor Hochul’s Signing of the Repeal of the 100-Foot Rule
ALBANY, N.Y. — Allison Considine, Interim New York Director for the Building Decarbonization Coalition (BDC), provided the following statement in response to Governor Hochul’s action to shield New Yorkers from unnecessary spending to expand the gas system:
“We applaud Governor Hochul for signing the repeal of the 100-foot rule line extension subsidy, ending the unfair requirement that costs New Yorkers over $600 million a year in unnecessary charges on their utility bills for new gas hookups. This reform brings long-overdue fairness to our energy system by ensuring clean energy options are cost competitive.
This will save New Yorkers money in year one, and prevent households from footing the bill for billions of dollars in future spending on expansion of the aging gas network as the state transitions to cleaner buildings. Today’s action is a major step forward to protect consumers and accelerate the transition towards a clean, cost-effective energy system. We are grateful to our partners in the legislature and the Governor for delivering this victory.”
